TCP performance

AIMD

Also called additive increase, multiplicative decrease, TCP fairness, fair share

TCP's rule for sharing a link: add a little each round trip, halve on loss.

Every connection adds the same to its window each round trip and halves it when a packet is lost. Adding keeps the gap between two connections as it is; halving takes more from the bigger one. Loss after loss the gap shrinks, and strangers end up splitting the link evenly with no one coordinating. It needs drops: a queue long enough to hold everything gives no signal, and the first connection keeps the link.
