Remote access

Console port

Also called console, serial console, console server, terminal server, rollover cable, 9600 8N1

A serial line straight into a device's operating system, working with every network down and even during boot.

Reached with a rollover (RJ-45) or USB console cable at 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control. No address, card or firewall rule stands in the way, so it is the last way in after a lockout or a bad configuration, and the first on a new device. Data centres wire every console to a console server (terminal server), reached over the management network or a cellular modem.
