Forwarding resolver

Also called forwarder, DNS forwarder, upstream resolver, public resolver, 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9, OpenDNS

A resolver that keeps a cache but sends every other question, whole, to one upstream resolver.

A recursive resolver walks the tree from the root itself. A forwarder (a home router's DNS, an office cache) hands each question it cannot answer to an upstream resolver with recursion desired, often a public one: Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, Google 8.8.8.8, Quad9 9.9.9.9, OpenDNS. The upstream sees the forwarder's address, not the device's, and decides every answer: its speed, uptime, logging and filtering become yours.
