TCP performance

MSS clamping

Also called clamp-mss-to-pmtu, TCPMSS

A router lowering the MSS in TCP SYNs to what its small link carries.

The ends then never send a segment too big for the path, with no ICMP needed. VPN gateways and PPPoE routers do it routinely. It helps TCP only.
