IPv6

Link-local address

Also called fe80::, zone, scope link, EUI-64

The fe80:: address every IPv6 card gives itself, valid only on its own link.

Made as soon as the card comes up, before any router or configuration: fe80:: and the interface id, often built from the MAC by modified EUI-64 (ff:fe in the middle, the universal/local bit flipped). It never crosses a router. Since every link has fe80::/64, using one needs the card too: fe80::1%eth0. Neighbour discovery and routers talk from these addresses.
