IPv6
SLAAC
Devices build their own IPv6 address from the prefix a router advertises.
A router sends router advertisements to all nodes, periodically and when asked by a router solicitation. Each carries the prefix (with the autonomous flag), a router lifetime making it a default router, and the MTU. Devices append their interface id to the prefix and route through the router's link-local address. No server keeps a list of addresses, unlike DHCP; DHCPv6 exists alongside it for the rest.
