Forwarding

Static route

Also called ip route, host route, network route, recursive route, recursive next hop, ipv6 route

A route typed in by hand: a prefix and the next hop to send it to.

On IOS ip route 10.0.2.0 255.255.255.0 10.0.12.3; on FRR the same with a prefix length. A /32 is a host route, a /24 a network route, 0.0.0.0/0 the default route. A next hop that is not on a connected network is resolved through another route: a recursive route. Every router on the path needs a route each way, and a static route stays in the table while its card is up, whether or not anyone answers at the next hop. IPv6 has its own table: ipv6 route.
