Configuration drift

Also called drift, baseline, golden config, dry run, check mode, --check --diff

A device's running config moving away from its intended one, usually through changes made by hand.

A change typed on one router, never written down, makes it differ from the others and from the record. With the intended config in files, a dry run (Ansible's --check --diff) compares each device with it and shows the difference line by line, without changing anything; a normal run puts the device back. Comparing with a baseline (the known good config) on a schedule turns this into drift detection.
