Names and DNS

DNS records

Also called A record, AAAA record, CNAME, NS, MX, TTL, SRV, TXT, PTR, SOA, reverse zone

The typed entries of a zone: A for an address, CNAME for an alias, NS for delegation, and more.

Each record has a TTL saying how long resolvers may cache it. A CNAME points one name at another; the resolver follows it and returns both. An AAAA record holds an IPv6 address, beside a name's A record. MX names a domain's mail server, SRV a service's host and port, TXT free text (SPF, ownership checks). Every zone starts with an SOA (its serial and timers), and a reverse zone under in-addr.arpa maps addresses back to names with PTR records. Changing a record takes effect as old copies expire.
